To Flush or Not to Flush…

To prevent a plumbing disaster, the following items may be safely flushGurgling toileted down the toilet without damaging the septic system:

  • Toilet paper labeled safe for septic systems
  • Wastewater (human waste)
  • Enzymes made for septic systems, like Bio-Tab®
  • A VERY SMALL amount of drain cleaner as an absolute LAST resort.

The following items may be washed down sinks, showers and tNatural soapubs:

  • Water
  • Soap as recommended by the manufacturer (preferably not anti-bacterial)
  • Mild household cleaners (use bleach and similar chemicals sparingly in drains)

These items should NONo food waste or coffee grinds in kitchen sinksT find their way into your septic tank:

  • Food scraps
  • Coffee grounds
  • Grease or oils
  • Animal or vegetable fats
  • Paper towels
  • Sanitary napkins
  • Tampons
  • Plastic or latex
  • Cigarette buttsCigarette butts don't belong in the toilet
  • Diapers
  • Baby & other types of flushable wipes (even if they say they are safe for septic systems)
  • Kitty litter
  • Paint & paint thinner
  • Waste oil
  • Pesticides
  • Antifreeze
  • Photography solutions
  • Pharmaceuticals

If you don’Don't flush drugs down the toilett know or aren’t sure…rinse it in a bucket and empty the contents in an inconspicuous place in a gravel driveway or other location away from landscape plants.
